It’s always important to stay prepared for winter weather, but it’s especially necessary as we begin to get older and the risks increase. In this article, we’ll share some of the top senior winter safety tips to keep you safe and prepared for this winter season.

While the winter season technically begins on December 21st in the northern hemisphere, cold weather and conditions associated with winter can begin much earlier. It’s always important to stay prepared for winter weather, but it’s especially necessary as we begin to get older and the risks increase. In this article, we’ll share some of the top senior winter safety tips to keep you safe and prepared for this winter season.

Safety Tips for Winter

  • Bundle Up – One of the most essential winter safety tips is to bundle up. This may seem obvious, but there are many times when we don’t properly prepare for the weather when we go out. That’s why it’s critical to always wear enough warm clothing when you go outside in the winter. This includes warm socks, gloves, pants, a heavy coat, a hat, and warm footwear. Depending on the specific weather conditions, hypothermia can set in in a matter of minutes, so staying prepared is vital to remaining safe.
  • Communicate – Another important tip is to communicate with your friends and family so they know you are okay. This includes keeping them updated when you leave your home by telling them when you are leaving, where you are going, and when you expect to return home. In the event that something happens to you or you experience an emergency, they will be able to respond and get help much faster since they know what your plan was.
  • Prepare for Storms – Preparing for winter storms is another crucial part of staying safe. Winter storms can bring snow, ice, and sleet that can cause hazardous driving conditions, power outages, and severe temperatures. Some of the most important winter storm safety tips include:
    • Paying attention to the news and weather reports so you know when winter storms are coming and can prepare
    • Staying inside during the storm and only going out when completely necessary
    • Avoiding driving unless it’s an emergency. Keep a full tank of gas in case you do need to leave
    • Building an emergency kit with a flashlight, blankets, warm clothing, water, food, medication, and more
  • Watch Your Step – One of the greatest risks during winter is slipping on ice or snow and falling down. This can lead to severe injuries, so it’s important to be cautious when walking outside during the winter. Be sure to keep an eye out for icy conditions, walk slowly, hold onto railings where available, and use snow and ice melt on the walkways around your home.
  • Ask for Assistance – A simple way to make sure you remain safe and healthy is to ask for assistance. We often try to do everything ourselves and don’t want to inconvenience others, but those situations can put our safety at risk. Asking someone else for help—whether it’s a trip to the store, helping with something outside your home, or anything else—is much easier and safer than trying to do things on your own.

A friend of mine found Celebrate Senior Living for me after touring multiple Independent Living facilities. I eventually transitioned to Skilled Nursing here at Celebrate and I like that I didn't have to leave this community. I've been in skilled nursing for about 5 years now. Since I cannot walk, they have helped me with a lot. The nurses are great! They are truly wonderful! I am currently doing therapy 3 times a week and they are wonderful and nice to work with. I really enjoy the chef's salad and the best part is that you can order it for any meal. I've found my best friend here, Beth! We spend every afternoon together catching up in the parlor.

Visited this facility during their annual easter event and it was a great experience! We loved that the easter bunny made an appearance as well to take family photos! They even brought real bunnies and the kids were able to pet them. Super cute! Great place to have an Easter egg hunt, it was super spacious. The facility was nice and everyone there was super friendly ☺️

We had the pleasure of attending their annual Easter Egg Hunt and we had such a good time, despite the terrible weather! My kids definitely enjoyed hunting for eggs, especially the Golden ones. They had a variety of treats and hot drinks and everyone was so welcoming, from the residents to the staff. They also had an Easter Bunny so the little ones were able to get some pictures with the Easter Bunny. I highly recommend everyone to attend next year! Overall, we had a great time and looking forward to next year’s Easter Egg Hunt.

Therapy and rehab on my hip and back have been going great. The therapists I have are very knowledgeable and caring and although it will take me a few months for me to feel much better, the progress I’m making with them has been extremely helpful.

All the therapists in this facility have been very encouraging and supportive on my journey to assisted living. They opened a whole new world of possibilities, challenges, and goals which I thought I could never achieve, but I did and much more than I could ever expect. When I was learning to climb stairs, the therapist taught me techniques to do so, I trusted the therapist and said, "let's do it!" That's been my mantra ever since. Now, I can climb a while flight of stairs. Through the exercises, I'm getting stronger! Assisted living has become a reality for me only because of my therapist's hard work and faith in me. May God reward all of you for all you have done for me and continue to do for me.

So many people who work there show the utmost compassion and caring for my father who is a resident there - if I have questions they look to find the answers- if I have needs they look to fulfill them- I feel like it is family every time I go there -
